About KALRO Gooseberry

Introduction to Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.)

The cape gooseberry, scientifically known as Physalis peruviana L., is a small, nutritious fruit with a unique flavor profile that has garnered attention across various regions, including Kenya. In 2010, the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), now rebranded as the Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), identified the cape gooseberry as an underutilized fruit within the country. During stakeholder evaluations, this fruit was ranked as the seventh most significant among underutilized fruits. While its exact introduction into Kenya remains somewhat unclear, experts suggest it might have arrived via bird migratory corridors from Europe and the Southern Hemisphere, or more recently through supermarket imports. The crop's origin traces back to South America, specifically Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador, where it eventually made its way to England in 1774 and later to the Cape of Good Hope before 1807.

Today, the cape gooseberry thrives in diverse environments throughout Kenya. It grows as an understory shrub in forested areas such as Mount Kenya, Mount Elgon, Timboroa Forest, Kakamega Forest, Koibatek Forest, and the Coastal lowlands. Additionally, it is widely distributed in the Kenyan highlands. Since the early 2000s, young entrepreneurs have been selling this fruit along the roadside in the Rift Valley, highlighting its growing popularity. Between 2004 and 2006, cape gooseberry cultivation saw a surge in Kibwezi, where large-scale farming practices were implemented. The harvested fruits were subsequently processed by Del Monte to produce jams, showcasing the fruit's versatility and potential in the food industry. Notably, the cape gooseberry—also referred to as goldenberry or yellow berry—is included among the 100 crops chosen for commercialization under Kenya's "Big Four Agenda," emphasizing its significance in the nation's agricultural landscape.

This fruit's journey from obscurity to recognition reflects its adaptability and nutritional value. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, the cape gooseberry offers numerous health benefits while also presenting opportunities for economic growth. Its inclusion in national initiatives underscores the importance of promoting underutilized crops like this one. As awareness spreads and demand increases, the cape gooseberry could become a key player in Kenya's agricultural sector, contributing to both local economies and global markets. With proper research, development, and marketing strategies, this humble fruit holds immense potential to transform livelihoods and enhance food security in Kenya and beyond.
