About DORS

Description of DORS Application

DORS (Digital Overdose Response System) is an innovative application designed to enhance the safety of individuals using opioids or other substances while alone. The majority of opioid-related deaths occur in private residences, often when people are using substances without anyone else around. DORS offers a secure method for summoning emergency services directly to the user's location if they experience an overdose.

Features and Functionality

The DORS app provides essential resources for individuals seeking addiction recovery, including contact information for the Addiction Helpline. Users can access more detailed information at DORSApp.ca/resources. It is important to note that the DORS app does not replace professional medical advice; users should always consult healthcare professionals for medical guidance and avoid using opioids or other substances alone.

Registration Process

To use the app, users must register through a straightforward process. This involves entering and confirming a mobile phone number, providing an address, and specifying any additional instructions needed for emergency responders to locate the user. The collected information is strictly confidential and limited to the phone number, address, and access instructions. No names or email addresses are stored. The information is securely held in Canada and shared only with authorized emergency services during a medical response.

Monitoring and Alerts

When using the app alone, users initiate a one-minute countdown timer. After 30 seconds, an alarm begins to sound, increasing in volume. Users can extend the timer in one-minute increments up to a maximum of five minutes. If the timer reaches zero, the app automatically sends a distress signal, initiating a call from a STARS agent. If the user does not respond or indicates a need for help, the agent will contact medical support on their behalf. Users can cancel the request if it was initiated unintentionally.

Ending Sessions and Responsibility

Once the user feels safe, they can end the session, at which point the reporting of their location stops. Users are fully responsible for ensuring the DORS app timer is properly ended and for monitoring their own health needs.

Availability and Collaboration

Developed in collaboration with Alberta Health, the DORS app is currently available for use within the Province of Alberta, Canada. It is not functional outside of these boundaries. For more information about DORS availability in your area, visit DORSApp.ca or email dors@aware360.com.
