An Engaging Educational Game

Feed the Monster is an educational game designed to help children learn to read in a fun and interactive way! This application combines the joy of collecting and nurturing virtual pet monsters with the essential skills of reading fundamentals. By feeding your monsters letters, you'll help them grow into new friends, all while improving your child's reading abilities.

How It Works

Feed the Monster utilizes proven 'play to learn' techniques to keep children engaged and motivated as they learn to read. As kids collect and grow their pet monsters, they also develop crucial reading skills. All content is 100% free, developed by literacy nonprofits Curious Learning, CET, and Apps Factory, and brought to South Africa through the support of BellaVista School.

Expert Development

The game is based on years of research and experience in literacy science. It integrates key skills such as Phonological Awareness, Letter Recognition, Phonics, Vocabulary, and Sight Word Reading, providing a solid foundation for reading. Built around the concept of caring for a collection of monsters, it encourages socio-emotional development and empathy in children.

Our Team

Feed the Monster was funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the EduApp4Syria competition. The original Arabic app was developed as a collaborative effort between Apps Factory, CET – The Center for Educational Technology, and IRC – The International Rescue Committee.

Adapted to English by Curious Learning, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making literacy accessible to everyone. Our team comprises researchers, developers, and educators committed to providing literacy education in native languages based on evidence and data. We are working to bring the Feed the Monster app to over 100 high-impact languages worldwide.
