Kentucky Discard: A Classic Card Game Experience

Kentucky Discard is the official tournament version of the beloved card game Rook, often referred to as Blackbird or Crows Nest. This digital adaptation brings the classic strategy and excitement of Rook to life, allowing players to enjoy the game with 12 unique AI opponents. Each AI character is programmed with distinct skill levels and playing styles, ensuring a challenging and engaging experience every time you play.

At its core, Rook is a trick-taking game that uses a specialized deck of 41 cards. These cards are divided into four colors—Black, Green, Red, and Yellow—and each color features numbers ranging from 5 to 14. Additionally, there is a special Bird card, known as the Rook card in traditional Rook games. Points are assigned to specific cards: each "5" card is worth 5 points, while "10" and "14" cards are valued at 10 points. The Bird card holds the highest value at 20 points, but all other cards do not contribute to the score.

The gameplay begins with the deck being evenly distributed among the four players, with each player receiving an equal number of cards. Five additional cards are placed face down in the center of the table, forming the "nest." After the initial deal, players engage in a bidding process, where they estimate how many points their team can collect during the round. The highest bidder earns the privilege of choosing the trump color, taking the nest to enhance their hand, and discarding unwanted cards before the game begins.

The player to the left of the dealer starts the round by playing any card from their hand. Other players must follow suit by playing a card of the same color if possible. If a player cannot match the lead color, they may play any card. Trump cards can override the lead color, with the highest trump card winning the trick. However, the Bird card reigns supreme, automatically winning any trick it is played in. The player who takes the trick collects the points from any captured 5s, 10s, or 14s, along with the 20-point Bird card if applicable. Taking the final trick also grants access to the nest, adding its point cards to the team's tally.

Scoring plays a crucial role in Kentucky Discard. Teams accumulate points throughout the round, but failure to meet the bid set by the high bidder results in severe consequences. In such cases, the team loses any points they collected and forfeits the full amount of their bid, deducted directly from their overall score. The ultimate goal is to be the first team to reach 300 points, marking victory in this strategic card game.
