About Foxe's Book of Martyrs

Introduction to Foxe's Book of Martyrs

Foxe's Book of Martyrs is a monumental work of Protestant history and martyrology, meticulously compiled and illustrated with over sixty distinctive woodcut impressions. This extensive project marked a significant milestone in English publishing, being one of the largest ever undertaken at the time. The first edition, titled Actes and Monuments of these Latter and Perillous Days, Touching Matters of the Church, spanned a comprehensive temporal range from the year 1000 to the present day. The book detailed the "persecutions and horrible troubles" inflicted upon Protestants by Roman Prelates, particularly in England and Scotland.

Expansion and Illustrations

The 1570 edition, published shortly after the first, doubled the content into two volumes, expanding from approximately 1,800 pages to over 2,300 folio pages. The number of woodcuts increased dramatically from 60 to 150. Unlike earlier texts that borrowed illustrations, Foxe’s illustrations were uniquely crafted to depict specific historical moments, linking England's struggles back to the early Christian era, covering the reign of King Henry VIII in the first volume, and extending through Queen Elizabeth I's reign in the second volume.

Content and Scope

Foxe's second edition, subtitled Ecclesiastical History, encompassed a broader scope of events, including "persecutions, horrible troubles, the suffering of martyrs, and other such things incident... in England and Scotland, and all other foreign nations." The second volume, titled Acts and Monuments of Martyrs, provided a comprehensive account of the persecutions, troubles, and tumults stirred up by Roman Prelates in the Church, further emphasizing the book's global relevance.
