Each turn begins with a roll of the dice, which determines how many spaces a player’s plane can move. Initially, players have the option to taxi a piece out of the hangar onto the board only if they roll an even number. Once on the board, planes move clockwise along the track according to the dice roll. However, several unique rules add layers of complexity and excitement to gameplay:

One intriguing feature is the special rule regarding rolling a six. Rolling a six grants the player an extra turn, and rolling consecutive sixes allows additional turns. If three consecutive sixes are rolled, however, all previously moved pieces must return to their hangars, and the turn passes to the next player. This mechanic keeps players on their toes and adds an element of unpredictability.

Another key rule involves capturing opponents’ pieces. When a player lands on a square occupied by an opponent’s plane, the opponent must return that piece to its hangar. Furthermore, when a plane lands on a space matching its own color, it leaps ahead to the next space of the same color. Opposing planes positioned on these squares are then sent back to their hangars. This rule creates opportunities for players to block opponents while advancing their own progress.

Shortcut squares are another highlight of Aeroplane Chess. These special squares allow players to bypass sections of the board when landed upon, sending any opposing planes in the shortcut path back to their hangars. Successive jumps and shortcuts can be combined, adding depth to strategic planning. Some variations of the game also permit direct landings on shortcuts followed by immediate jumps.

Stacking planes within the same fleet adds yet another layer of strategy. When two planes of the same fleet occupy the same space, they can be stacked and moved together. Stacked pieces remain united until they reach the center or are disrupted by an opponent’s landing. If stacked pieces are returned to the hangar due to an opponent’s move, they lose their stacking status.

The game concludes when a plane successfully flies into the center base using an exact dice roll. Upon completing this feat, the plane is placed face down in its hangar, signifying its completion for the game. Victory goes to the first player who successfully moves all four of their planes to the center. The remaining players continue playing until only one player remains, determining the final loser.
