The "ARt Dachau - Augmented Reality" app offers a unique and immersive experience that combines art, history, and cutting-edge technology. This application, which is the abbreviated form of the project titled "The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial in Drawings. Art meets augmented reality", uses augmented reality (AR) to bring to life hundreds of prisoner drawings created at the Dachau memorial site. These drawings serve as visual narratives that encapsulate the harrowing history of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial.

At the heart of the app lies its innovative use of AR technology. By leveraging this technology, the app overlays these historical drawings onto the actual grounds of the Concentration Camp Memorial. This creates an interactive and engaging experience where visitors can explore the stories behind each drawing while walking through the physical spaces they depict. Additionally, the app features graphic novels designed by descendants of prisoners and other artists. These graphic novels provide another layer of storytelling, allowing users to connect emotionally with the past.

To further enrich the experience, the app includes audio contributions from historians and descendants of former prisoners. These audio clips offer detailed explanations of the drawings, helping visitors understand their significance within the broader context of the Holocaust. The app is designed to be accessible and user-friendly. A guided tour with the app consists of 22 pictures located across the outdoor areas of the concentration camp memorial. This tour typically takes around an hour to complete, providing visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the historical events and artistic expressions tied to the site. Visitors can also view individual images independently by scanning QR codes placed on the memorial's steles. This flexibility allows users to explore the app at their own pace and focus on specific aspects of interest.

Interactive elements are integrated throughout the app, enhancing engagement and ensuring a dynamic learning experience. For optimal audio clarity, headphones are recommended to fully appreciate the accompanying narratives. It’s advisable to download the app prior to your visit to the memorial, as it operates offline once installed. This ensures uninterrupted access to all features without requiring an active internet connection.

Technical requirements include a smartphone or tablet that supports ARCore, Google’s augmented reality platform. The app itself is available free of charge, making it accessible to anyone interested in exploring this poignant piece of history.

Developed collaboratively by the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site and the startup ZAUBAR, the app received financial support from several notable organizations, including the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” (EVZ), the Bavarian Sparkasse Foundation, and the Foundation Bavarian Memorials. This collective effort underscores the importance of preserving and sharing the lessons of history through modern technological means.
