A Legacy of Community Impact

Founded in 1976, Greenmarket was established with a dual purpose: to support small family farms by offering them direct sales opportunities to consumers, and to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, most nutritious locally grown food available.

What began as a modest operation with just 12 farmers in a parking lot has evolved into an extensive network of 54 markets, involving over 230 family farms and fishermen, and protecting more than 30,000 acres of farmland from development.

Beyond the Market

This unique partnership between farmers and city residents has transformed both rural and urban environments. It has revitalized communities, improved public health, and provided fresh, nutritious food to those in need through the EBT/Food Stamp and Youthmarket programs. Additionally, Greenmarket supports immigrant farmers, encourages crop diversity, educates school children and city residents about regional agriculture, and influences culinary trends.
