BPES-Biblioteca Pública do ES

The "BPES-Biblioteca Pública do ES" is the official application for the Public Library of the Holy Spirit, more specifically, it serves as an essential gateway to the Biblioteca Pública do Espírito Santo, which is a significant repository of historical and rare literature in the state of Espírito Santo.

The virtual library offers the public access to its digitized historical collection, continuously expanding with rare works. The physical library, founded on July 16, 1855, in one of the rooms on the second floor of the Palace during the governorship of President of the Province Sebastião Machado Nunes, was initiated by Braz da Costa Rubim (1812-1871). Rubim donated the first 400 volumes to the library, comprising pamphlets and booklets.

As the fifth public library established at the state level in Brazil, the library gained prominence and administrative support through Law No. 19, dated May 10, 1880. It was relocated to a dedicated space in the Suá Beach area in 1979 under Governor Élcio Álvares. Covering an area of 1,458.5 square meters, the library houses classic works of Capixaba historiography and literature, along with rare books, often produced or found within Espírito Santo.

On December 17, 2004, the library was renamed Biblioteca Pública Estadual Levy Cúrcio da Rocha in honor of this Capixaba historian. As a cultural entity, the Biblioteca Pública do Espírito Santo is affiliated with the State Secretariat of Culture (SECULT) and is headquartered in Vitória, the capital city of Espírito Santo.
