A Journey Through History and Gastronomy
The Road of Tartufo, known as Oltrepò Mantovano, is a region steeped in historical richness and cultural tradition. Situated along the Po River, this area serves as a pivotal intersection of northern and southern European influences, as well as eastern and western exchanges. The region's strategic location has ensured it retains significant traces of its illustrious past, from the ancient Etruscans and Romans to the influential Benedictine monks and Matilda of Canossa, the Gonzaga family's ducal rule, and the epoch-defining independence wars and peasant revolts.
A Culinary Paradise
This territory's deep-seated agricultural identity translates into a culinary landscape that is a harmonious blend of luxury and simplicity. Traditional delicacies such as cured meats, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, pumpkin tortelli, Agnoli (a cousin of tortellini) served in broth, risottos, truffles, stews known as stracotti, and tagliatelle pie are just a few of the local favorites that highlight the area's unique gastronomic heritage.
The Heart of White Truffle Country
At the core of this culinary journey lies the Strada del Tartufo Mantovano. This route is where the combination of fertile soil, favorable climate, and unique habitat converge to create the perfect conditions for cultivating the highly prized Tuber Magnatum Pico, commonly known as the white truffle. Established at the close of 2003, the Strada del Tartufo Mantovano Association aims to boost regional growth by promoting tourism centered around the distinctive products and culinary traditions of the area, alongside high-quality services.
