The Greeting Fluency Initiative aims to foster respect and understanding among different cultural communities by encouraging people to learn simple greetings in the languages spoken by their neighbors. This initiative recognizes that even a small gesture like learning basic greetings can significantly enhance mutual respect and appreciation for diverse cultures within our communities.

The Greeting Fluency Aid smartphone application serves as an essential tool for individuals interested in mastering greeting phrases in various languages. The app offers free access to audio recordings created by native speakers, ensuring accurate pronunciation and fluency. By downloading this app, users can engage with a wide range of languages, including those spoken by First Nations communities in British Columbia, many of which are at risk of disappearing.

A Tool for Cultural Understanding

Founder of Global Civic, Sam Sullivan, emphasizes that achieving greeting fluency requires minimal effort but yields significant benefits. The app supports this goal by providing comprehensive resources for learners. It includes a variety of languages such as Arabic, Cantonese, Farsi, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Mongolian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. Additionally, the app features endangered First Nations languages from British Columbia, including Beaver, Bella Coola, Chinook, Dakelh, Haida, Haisla, Hulquminum, Kaska, Kwak, Lillooet, Nadleh, Nisgaa, Nuuchahnulth, Okanagan, Saanich, Sechelt, Sekani, Shuswap, Sliammon, Southern, Tagish, Tlingit, and Wetsuweten.
