Kannammal Educational Trust in 1985, the institution initially took shape as the Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. Three years later, in 1988, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was inaugurated, followed by the establishment of the Thai Moogambigai Dental College in 1991.

In 2003, both institutions achieved significant recognition when they were granted Deemed University status under the name Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute. This milestone was made possible through the directives of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi.
