Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Vermont, Northfield Country Club stands as a testament to the enduring passion for golf and community spirit. Founded in the early 1920s, the club’s journey began humbly on the slopes of Turkey Hill, where two young golf enthusiasts, Jack Morse and Homer Denny, crafted their own "browns" from sod circles. This grassroots effort quickly caught the attention of local businessmen and Norwich University, which offered its Sabine Field for practice sessions. These early initiatives laid the groundwork for what would become a cherished institution in Northfield.

The formalization of the country club came in the late 1920s when a dedicated committee led by Dean Sibley, Sam White, and Max Sanborn spearheaded the search for a proper golf course location. They eventually secured the Hebert Freeman house and farm near the Harlow Bridge. With unwavering determination, nine enthusiastic golfers took it upon themselves to construct the first hole, enlisting volunteer assistance to bring their vision to life. Under the guidance of Mr. Sanborn, who played a pivotal role in the design and landscaping, the course began to take shape. The Freemans, who continued to reside on the property, provided invaluable support as the groundskeeper and clubhouse manager, respectively.

The club's development gained momentum with the arrival of Lester Heon, a professional golfer from the Montpelier Country Club. Even before the course was fully constructed, Heon began offering lessons, sparking further interest among locals. Over time, trees were planted throughout the course, enhancing its aesthetic appeal, while subsequent renovations expanded and modernized the clubhouse. During World War II, key figures like James Cruikshank and John Moseley ensured the club's continuity, maintaining the course despite the absence of many members. Their efforts preserved the club’s competitive edge, enabling matches against other prestigious clubs.

Throughout its history, Northfield Country Club has been enriched by the contributions of numerous families, including the Fernandez, Denny, Cruikshank, Wright, and Tracy families, whose dedication has fostered growth and success. The club has not only evolved through these efforts but has also faced significant challenges. One such ordeal came during Tropical Storm Irene, which severely damaged five bridges spanning the Dog River and affected the first, second, and ninth fairways. Despite this adversity, the club rallied together and successfully overcame these obstacles, emerging stronger than ever.

Today, Northfield Country Club boasts a vibrant membership of 200 members and remains accessible to the public every day. Its commitment to excellence and community involvement continues to resonate with both long-time members and newcomers alike.
