eID-Me is now available across Canada! This secure digital identity application allows you to digitize and securely store your government-issued identity and self-managed identity information directly on your Android phone.

Registration Requirements

To get started with eID-Me, you'll need:

An NFC-enabled Android phone running Android 6 or later.
A valid email address.
One of the following Canadian government-issued photo IDs associated with your current address:
- Driver's licence
- Photo ID card
- Services card
You must be physically close to the address associated with your photo ID during registration.
Optionally, a passport to enhance your Identity Assurance Level (IAL), which increases the likelihood of passing identity verification. Higher IAL means your digital identity is more trusted by various services.

Introduction

eID-Me simplifies online identity verification by eliminating the need for passwords and enhancing privacy. While it currently cannot replace legal identification, our aim is to facilitate access to services requiring verified identity, such as government, financial, and healthcare services.

How It Works

During registration, you will use your Android phone to verify your identity through a selfie with liveness detection and by scanning your government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport). Your phone will then receive a unique eID-Me digital identity, complete with a digital certificate containing verified identity claims.

This digital identity can be used to access services both online and offline, enabling secure sharing of identity information.

Privacy and Security

Your identity information remains on your Android phone and is never hosted by a centralized service or third-party provider. Once your identity is verified, a secure certificate is installed on your phone, ensuring that this information is only accessible to you unless you choose to share it.

The eID-Me digital wallet on your Android phone is secured with strong encryption, leveraging hardware security mechanisms, and is tied to your chosen authentication method (Face Unlock, Fingerprint Unlock, or PIN).
