The vision for Sawmill began with Carl Schwenker and his dream of building a golf course, following up on successful pool and home construction businesses. After searching for locations throughout Niagara, a dairy farm on Sawmill Road was selected. The rural property was characterized by gently rolling hills, deciduous forests, and two meandering creeks. Once the land was purchased by George and Gail Julie (Carl's daughter), they moved into the farmhouse and construction on the course began.

The course, designed by Gord Witteveen and Nicol Thompson, opened for play in 1976 to humble beginnings. Despite mediocre playing conditions in the early years, the layout took advantage of the existing natural features and many trees were planted. As the course matured with trees, new tees and bunkers were built (or renovated), cart paths were installed and turf conditions flourished.

Carl Schwenker designed and built the original clubhouse with accompanying tennis courts and a swimming pool. The clubhouse underwent a major renovation during the winter of 2009/10 and still sits prominently offering panoramic views of the course. In 2014, a driving range opened on adjacent property to complement the existing short game practice area.

Sawmill is a busy semi-private club with a growing membership, active leagues, and lesson programs. Our junior program has quickly grown into one of Niagara's finest and we provide lessons to over 150 kids each summer. We are home to many successful local charity and business tournaments and we regularly host competitive junior, amateur and pro events.

For over forty years, we've continued to improve and now we're one of Niagara's most popular courses. Although many golfers still fondly remember Sawmill as a ‘hidden gem,' the secret is out!
