About Mass Moment of Inertia Lite
This application, "Mass Moment of Inertia Lite," offers a powerful and intuitive way to analyze the mass moment of inertia for various shapes. It enables users to draw any closed, open, or cut 2D geometry, extrude it into a 3D model, and then compute essential mass moment of inertia properties. These properties are crucial for predicting the structural mechanics and dynamic performance of objects.
For standard shapes, mass moment of inertia values can often be found in tables or through standard formulas. However, for irregular or non-standard shapes, these values are not readily available. With this tool, you can easily draw any arbitrary shape, extrude it, and calculate its geometric and inertial properties. The application also supports predicting the mass properties of regular or standard shapes by simply tapping the cross-section.
To use the application, tap the vertices of your 2D cross-section in either clockwise or counterclockwise order. You can draw using both freehand and straight lines, and create holes or cuts by tapping the vertices of these features. The application assumes a unit depth of extrusion and a unit density for mass property predictions. Click "mass MI" to calculate the mass properties. The default drawing window size is 2 meters, with a snap size of 0.02 meters, but you can adjust these settings via the options menu. You can also edit the X, Y coordinates of the vertices for precise numerical input.
The mass moment of inertia is a key metric that measures how efficiently a shape resists rotation. It is a fundamental property of a rigid body that determines the torque required for a given angular acceleration around an axis of rotation. The tool calculates the mass moment of inertia using a general formula derived from Green's theorem, which transforms domain integrals into boundary integrals. This approach ensures high accuracy for shapes with straight-line boundaries.
The accuracy of the predictions for shapes with curved boundaries can be enhanced by increasing the number of vertices. Despite this, the application excels at handling complex and arbitrary shapes, such as corroded or damaged components, custom-built sections, 3D-printed models, and intricate designs. For these challenging cases, Mass Moment of Inertia Lite stands out as the ideal tool for predicting mass properties.
Note that the free version of the app limits the number of vertices to 14 and restricts certain functionalities like opening, saving, importing, exporting, and sharing to five operations. The Pro version, however, offers virtually unlimited vertices and full functionality, including support for A, V, m, Ixx, Iyy, Ixy properties, XY coordinates, holes, composite sections, data import/export, suggestions, and sharing capabilities.
