ASEAN Summit 2021 in Brunei Darussalam

The "ASEAN Brunei 2021" application provides an in-depth look into the ASEAN Summit held in Brunei Darussalam, offering users a comprehensive understanding of Brunei's pivotal role within the ASEAN community.

Historical Context

Brunei Darussalam became the sixth member of ASEAN in January 1984, shortly after regaining full independence. This significant moment was marked by the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, at the admission ceremony in Jakarta, Indonesia. Since joining ASEAN, the nation has integrated itself deeply into the regional framework, participating in various mechanisms such as the ASEAN Regional Forum, ASEAN Plus Three, and the East Asia Summit. These initiatives have helped solidify Brunei's position in regional diplomacy.

Key Milestones

In a landmark event on November 20, 2007, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, alongside other ASEAN leaders, signed the ASEAN Charter in Singapore. Brunei Darussalam was the second member state to ratify the Charter on January 31, 2008, underscoring its commitment to regional cooperation.

Leadership Contributions

Brunei has also made significant contributions through its nationals serving in key roles within the ASEAN Secretariat. Notable figures include Dato Roderick Yong (1986-1989), Dato Haji Mahadi Wasli (1994-1997), Pengiran Dato Mashor Pg. Ahmad (2003-2005), and most recently, Dato Lim Jock Hoi (January 2018 – December 2022), who served as ASEAN Secretary-General.

Current Roles

Currently, Brunei Darussalam holds the position of country coordinator for ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) dialogue relations from 2018 to 2021, and will assume the role of country coordinator for ASEAN-New Zealand dialogue relations from 2021 to 2024. In this capacity, Brunei is responsible for coordinating all aspects of ASEAN's relations with the ROK and serves as a vital link between ASEAN Member States and the ROK.
