Gameplay Rules

Hoşkin is played using only the following cards from a deck of 4 52-card decks: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10s. This results in a total of 80 cards in the game. The objective is to collect the most points.

Different Names and Similar Rules

This game is known by various names in different regions, including Hoşgen, Hoskin, Hosgin, Okşin, Piniker, Nezere, and Horskil. Despite the different names, the rules remain largely the same.

Game Objective

Before the game begins, players estimate the number of hands they can win. Each player takes turns saying a number for the tender, and the player who takes the tender tries to get at least as many hands as the number he said. If not, he receives points equal to the number he bid.

Scoring Points

Points are scored in two ways:

1. Initial Hand Selection:

   • Aces: One ace from each series = 100 points; Two aces = 1000 points; Three aces = 1500 points; Four aces = 2000 points.
   • Kings (Priests): One King from each series = 80 points; Two Kings = 800 points; Three Kings = 1200 points; Four Kings = 1600 points.
   • Queens (Girls): One Queen from each series = 60 points; Two Queens = 600 points; Three Queens = 900 points; Four Queens = 1200 points.
   • Jacks: One Jack from each series = 40 points; Two Jacks = 400 points; Three Jacks = 600 points; Four Jacks = 800 points.
   • Trump Series: A10KQJ of the trump card = 150 points.
   • Finish: Queen of Spades and Jack of Diamonds meeting = 40 points; Two pairs = 300 points; Three pairs = 600 points; Four pairs = 3600 points.
   • Married: A Priest and a Girl of the same color = 40 points (trump suit) or 20 points (other suits).

2. During the Game:

   • Card Values: Ace = 11 points, 10 = 10 points, King = 4 points, Queen = 3 points, Jack = 2 points.
   • Last Trick: The player who takes the last trick wins 20 more points.
   • Bid Loss: If the bidder does not get the number he promised, he loses the number he bid. For example, if someone who bids 360 gets 350, he goes bankrupt with -360 points.
   • No Tricks Taken: A player who does not take any tricks cannot score points. The calculated count is reset when the game starts.

Gameplay Mechanics

Each player starts with 20 cards. On their turn, the first player plays a trump card or a non-trump card. The next player must also play a card from that series unless they do not have any cards of that suit. They can then play a trump card or discard an ordinary card.

If the trump card is not played, the player with the highest card takes the hand. If the trump card is played, the player with the highest trump card takes the hand. For example, if the game starts with the Ace of Clubs and the trump card is a diamond, even the lowest diamond card can win the trick. Trump cards are valued higher but can only be used if there are no remaining cards of the suit played.

Unique Situations

In Hoşkin, there are 4 of each card. For instance, when a Club Ace is thrown, the next player can also throw a Club Ace. In such cases, the player who throws first wins the trick.
