This project addresses the recurring issue of persistent flooding in underpasses during extreme weather events. The primary goal is to provide timely warnings to motorists, ensuring they are aware of potential hazards before entering these areas.

To achieve this objective, a sophisticated network of sensors has been installed at strategic locations within five key underpasses: Calatafimi, Pitrè, Da Vinci, Lazio, and Belgium. These sensors are highly sensitive and capable of detecting even minor accumulations of water. Once water levels reach predefined alarm thresholds, the system triggers immediate action. Flashing warning lights are activated inside the underpasses, alerting drivers to the presence of standing water. Simultaneously, alerts are sent directly to traffic management authorities to facilitate swift intervention and resolution of the situation.

In addition to real-time alerts, the AMAP SAFE App offers users a convenient way to stay informed about road conditions. Users who grant permission can receive push notifications on their smartphones, keeping them updated about potential risks in their vicinity. The app also provides detailed information about each monitored underpass, including current water accumulation levels, any critical issues flagged by the system, and live images captured every five minutes (or every 15 minutes when it’s not raining). This feature allows citizens to make informed decisions about their travel routes and avoid hazardous areas.
