LVFree Vision Enhancer is a smartphone application designed to enhance the visual capabilities of individuals with low vision. Unlike other head-mounted video goggles that come with hefty price tags, LVFree Vision Enhancer is completely free and accessible to anyone with a camera-equipped smartphone running Android 7 or later.

Real-Time Image Processing

The app utilizes advanced mathematical algorithms to process the visual scene captured by your smartphone's camera in real time. This allows users to see a modified version of the scene displayed on their phone's screen. LVFree Vision Enhancer offers four distinct image-processing settings:

• Medium Magnification: Increases the size of objects in the field of view.
• High Magnification: Provides even greater magnification for detailed observation.
• Brightness Enhancement: Boosts the brightness of the scene, especially useful at medium magnification.
• Reverse Contrast: Inverts the colors, making it easier to distinguish details at medium magnification.

Viewing Modes

LVFree Vision Enhancer can be used in two different viewing modes:

• Direct Viewing Mode: The processed scene fills the entire screen, providing a clear and immersive experience.
• Headset Viewing Mode: By mounting the phone on a Google Cardboard-like virtual reality headset, the processed scene is duplicated and displayed on both halves of the screen. The headset then combines these images into a single stereoscopic view, enhancing depth perception.

User Interface and Instructions

Upon launching the app, an instruction screen will appear for 7 seconds. You can navigate through the four direct viewing settings using the volume down button and switch between the four headset viewing settings using the volume up button. For optimal comfort during prolonged use, it is recommended to use headsets with soft padding.

Usage Guidelines

While LVFree Vision Enhancer is incredibly helpful for everyday tasks like reading medication labels, price tags, and menus, it should never be used while walking around or driving. To enhance visibility further, many smartphones allow you to activate the flashlight via the notification menu that slides out from the top edge of the screen.

The development of LVFree Vision Enhancer was supported by a grant from the Promobilia Foundation in Sweden, awarded to researchers in the Ophthalmology, Mathematics, and Neurology departments at the University of Michigan. This collaboration has made it possible to create a powerful tool that can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with low vision.
