In May 1917, he made a direct plea to the Blessed Mother to intercede on behalf of peace in the world. Just over a week later, on May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three young shepherd children—Lucia dos Santos (age 10) and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto (ages nine and seven)—in the small village of Fatima, located approximately 70 miles north of Lisbon, Portugal.
