Palm Kiosk: Secure Your Home Screen with Ease
Palm Kiosk is a powerful yet straightforward tool designed to ensure that only approved applications are accessible on your device. With Palm Kiosk, you can easily configure which apps are visible and usable directly from your home screen. Unapproved apps will require a PIN to unlock the kiosk, ensuring that unauthorized access is prevented.
Designed for Everyone, Everywhere
Originally developed by Last Mile Health, a non-profit organization committed to saving lives in remote regions, Palm Kiosk is now available as an open-source solution. It offers a cost-effective alternative to other locking mechanisms, without the need for expensive subscription plans. Additionally, Palm Kiosk is entirely ad-free and does not collect or transmit any user data, making it a reliable choice for various needs including business, parenting, and recreational purposes.
Two Modes for Enhanced Control
Palm Kiosk operates in two primary modes: LOCKED and UNLOCKED. In the UNLOCKED mode, administrators have the flexibility to modify the list of visible apps, organize them, lock the kiosk, change the password, and exit the application. When the kiosk is LOCKED, it overlays the standard home screen, displaying only the pre-approved applications. Even if an approved app tries to access an unapproved feature like the camera, it will remain inaccessible unless explicitly allowed.
Getting Started
To integrate Palm Kiosk into your Android device, set it as the "home application" under the "Home settings" within the device's settings menu. Exiting the app requires navigating to the settings/home section and selecting your Android device’s default home application. Initially, the app launches in the UNLOCKED mode. Access the settings menu by clicking the lock icon in the bottom right corner. The default password is 1234.
Security and Support
In case you forget the password, you can boot the device in safe mode, change the default home application, and reset the application. However, preventing booting into safe mode adds an extra layer of security. Detailed instructions for this process are available here.
Palm Kiosk utilizes the Device Administrator permission to ensure unauthorized apps cannot open while the kiosk is active. Rest assured, this app does not collect or submit any data, providing peace of mind for users concerned about privacy and security.
