mSMART Medication Aide

The mSMART app is a smoking cessation and medication adherence app that has been customized to support an ongoing clinical study related to Chantix-based smoking cessation treatment. The clinical study is being administered by the Duke University School of Medicine (DUSM) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and has been approved by the DUSM Institution Review Board.

The mSMART app is part of a family of medication adherence apps that are being developed to improve patient’s medication adherence rates by using mobile intervention and education.

The content presented in the app was developed by Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI), and is based on research, analysis and meta-analysis of various publicly available data sources, medical publications, and interviews of medical practitioners. The content has been reviewed by clinical psychologists at DUSM, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and the DUSM IRB. The application content is owned and copyrighted by Intelligent Automation, Inc.

Once downloaded, only registered users can access the app. A registered user is one who has already been screened by DUSM, signed the required waivers, has met the required inclusion criteria, and is provided with a user ID to access the app. Users not approved for the clinical trial are not provided access and are directed to DUSM to learn about the trial. How does mSMART work?
Since the adherence barriers and struggles experienced by individuals vary, the mSMART app delivers personalized behavioral interventions to each individual, as a list of strategies that the individual must focus on and practice. It uses innovative, getting-to-know-you types of brief engagements and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based solutions to target the most critical barriers and offer relevant strategies and advices to overcome them. mSMART also offers a unique camera-based medication dose logging feature that not only helps manage complex regimen prescriptions, but can also provide greater tracking assurance to you, your doctor and your loved ones.
