The 15th night of the 7th lunar month is the Chinese Ghost Festival, which was first formed during the 5th century, and finally became a traditional festival during Song Dynasty (960-1276). There is a saying that each year on the first night of the 7th lunar calendar, King Yama, the god of death and ruler of Hell, would open the gate of Hell, set all the ghosts out for an entire month to receive the worship from their posterities alive.

At this time of the year, Chinese people do worship, release paper boat and river lanterns on water to memories ancestor and wish for a safe and peaceful year.
