تمتعت منطقة الخليج العربي منذ القديم بأهمية استراتيجية وبرزت كمركز تجاري فعال يربط بين الشرق والغرب فاستقطبت العديد من الأقوام والشعوب التي وجدت في السيطرة عليها أهمية كبيرة لضمان مصالحها وتجارتها.
وعند ظهور الإسلام في القرن السابع الميلادي أولت الدولة العربية الجديدة اهتماما خاصا بمنطقة الخليج العربي، وفي عهد الدولة الأموية بقيت التجارة والملاحة والسيادة في الخليج العربي بيد العرب وحدهم. ولقد زاد من انتقال عاصمة الخلافة العربية من دمشق إلى بغداد في زمن الدولة العباسية من أهمية الخليج العربي وتقدم الملاحة والتجارة فيه وفي المحيط الهندي وذلك لن الدولة العربية في زمن العباسيين اتجهت في اهتمامها نحو الشرق أكثر مما كان في زمن الأمويين الذين تطلعوا إلى البحر المتوسط . وبذلك أصبح العصر العباسي هو العصر الذهبي للخليج العربي لأن الدولة العربية آنذاك ضمت مناطق شاسعة مترامية. كان الخليج العربي واسطة العقد في تجارتها ومنطلق الإسلام في الشرق.
