تبقى بطولة كأس الأمير المفدى الـحـدث الأهم الذي يترقبه الجميع كل موسم وتبقى المباراة النهائية في ختام الموسم الكروي من كل عام بمثابة العرس الكبير .. لما تمثله المباراة النهائية للكأس الغالية من قيمة معنوية كبيرة ذات مضامين رياضية ، وإجتماعية وثقافية كبيرة ، والسبب الرئيس هو تشريف سمو أمير البلاد المفدى للمباراة النهائية ، والتي لا يوجد خاسر فيها ، لأن الكل فائز بشرف مصافحة سمو الأمير المفدى .
فمنذ انطلاق بطولة كأس الأمير في الموسم الرياضي 1972- 73 ، وهي تشهد منافسات قوية ومثيرة ، وفاز بلقبها الأول نادي الأهلي ، ويبقى فريق نادي السد صاحب الحظ الأوفر بين الأندية القطرية من حيث عدد الألقاب التي فاز بها برصيد ١٦ لقباً ، ويليه فريق نادي العربي برصيد 8 ألقاب .

وشهدت كأس الأمير تغييرات قليلة منذ أن تم لعبها لأول مرة في أوائل السبعينيات ، ففي عام 1999 ، تم ضم فرق القسم الثاني إلى جانب فرق الدرجة الأولى التي تلعب في بطولة دوري نجوم قطر ، و في عام 2004 ، أقيمت البطولة من خمس مراحل بعد أن تحول الدوري إلى الأقسام الثلاثة ، ومروراً بخطوات التطور ، حت باتت تقام على ست مراحل الآن وصولاً للمباراة النهائية .

Since the very beginning, the Amir Cup has had enjoyed a special place in the country’s national sports calendar. A dream for any football player, Amir Cup matches bring out the best in every team and coaches. The chance of receiving the trophy from none other than the Amir is often described as a dream by players.

The Amir Cup was first played in 1972 and was won by Al Ahli. The event is contested every season by all 16 QNB Stars League and Second Division teams. The most successful team are Al Sadd who won the tournament 16 times followed by Al Arabi who have bagged the title on 8 occasions. Al Sadd are the defending champions.

The Amir Cup has undergone a few changes since it was first played in the early 70s. In 1999, it was decide to include Second Division sides along with the top tier teams playing for Qatar national league title. In 2004, the tournament was planed in such a manner that the event would last for five stages .
