Although studies show that only about 30 to 45 percent of the English language can be understood through lip reading alone, Lip reading can often assist speech understanding. Adding visual signals provides the greatest chance for success in conversations, and increases one's confidence in their ability to communicate.

While real-world experience is the best tool at a lip reading learner’s disposal, systemic teaching plus constant and focused training can certainly boost the skills.
